Savings are estimates from this calculator using the same tax year and province. They are general ideas, not advice for your situation. Check your RRSP and FHSA room on your notice of assessment or CRA My Account before contributing.
What the calculator does, and what it leaves out.
It follows the same order as the T1 itself: total income, deductions, net income, tax, credits, then what you have already paid.
Refund or balance owing
Your refund is the tax already taken off your pay (T4 box 22) and any instalments, minus the tax you actually owe. Self-employed people usually owe, because nobody withheld tax or CPP on that income.
Why RRSPs change the number
An RRSP or FHSA deduction comes off your income at your marginal rate. The result panel shows what another $1,000 would add to your refund. For 2026, you can contribute until March 1, 2027.
What is not included
Dividends, pension splitting, spouse and dependant amounts, the Canada workers benefit, Ontario’s LIFT credit and other provincial refundable credits. The GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit are paid separately and are not part of your refund.
